Alumnus of the 22nd class of the Department of Journalism, Professor Eddie Kuo Chen-yu (Eddie C.Y. Kuo), Emeritus Professor of Nanyang Technological University, has passed away at the age of 85.
Professor Kuo devoted his life to communication and social science research. After graduating from the Department of Journalism at National Chengchi University, he pursued further studies in the United States and dedicated himself to academia and education throughout his career. His influence extended across Asia, the United States, and Singapore, where he mentored countless students and left a lasting impact. He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, and later founded the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University, laying an important foundation for the development of communication and social sciences in Singapore.
Professor Kuo’s academic vision was broad. He focused long-term on multiculturalism, language policy, and ethnic identity—issues of critical importance. He offered deep insights into Singapore’s cultural and communication landscape. Not only was he recognized as a leading figure in communication education, but he also emphasized a humanistic perspective, reminding the world that multilingualism and multiculturalism are not sources of division, but rather the roots of social richness and inclusiveness.
He founded the journal Asian Journal of Communication, promoting the internationalization of communication studies in Asia. He also served as President of the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC), making outstanding contributions to both regional and global academic communities. His academic achievements and personal integrity have long been regarded as exemplary.
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Department of Journalism, the publication Lighting the Path: 75 Distinguished Alumni of NCCU Journalism included an interview with Professor Eddie Kuo Chen-yu.
Professor Kuo’s life bore witness to and documented the significant transformations of communication and society in Asia. His ideas and spirit will endure in academic institutions and in the hearts of countless educators.
