In Memoriam
Professor Lee Chin-chuan, Yushan Scholar of the College and an internationally renowned scholar in communication, has passed away. The field of communication studies has lost a towering figure.
Professor Lee Chin-chuan was an outstanding alumnus of the 29th class of the Department of Journalism and a globally respected communication scholar. His academic career spanned several major institutions. He served as Associate Professor and later Professor at the University of Minnesota (1982–2004), and was a Visiting Professor at Academia Sinica (1986–87, 1992), Visiting Chair Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (1994–98), and Visiting Chair Professor at National Chengchi University (2008). He later joined City University of Hong Kong as Chair Professor (2002–present), where he was the founding Head of the Department of Media and Communication (2008–12) and founding Director of the Centre for Communication Research (2005–15). He also served as the founding President of the Chinese Communication Association (1990), exerting profound influence on the international communication community.
In 2019, Professor Lee returned to his alma mater as a Yushan Scholar, continuing to contribute his deep academic expertise to both the scholarly community and the university.
Professor Lee devoted decades to the fields of political communication and Chinese media studies. His scholarly achievements were outstanding and internationally acclaimed, leaving a lasting impact on the development of global communication research. Known for his rigorous scholarship, broad vision, and deep humanistic concern, he not only expanded the boundaries of academic inquiry but also inspired countless younger scholars.
We extend our deepest condolences and highest respect, and offer our sincere sympathies to his family. His legacy and exemplary character will endure.
