Introduction
The University News is a newspaper edited and published independently by the students of the Department. The University News is a biweekly newspaper published on Friday.
It targets university students in Taiwan as readers. Unlike student newspapers at other universities, it enjoys a high degree of editorial autonomy, and is independently run and operated by students. Writing from a student perspective, it reports information related to Taiwanese university campus life, connecting students, educational institutes, policymakers, and other members of the university community.

Editorial policies and operational procedures are determined and managed by senior (fourth year) students who serve as leaders and tutors for junior (third year) students who serve as editors or reporters. Upon the request by students, two faculty consultants may assist and provide advice in editorial decisions concerning controversies or conflicts. They do not otherwise influence editorial decisions. This student-led paper emphasizes "learning by doing" and "trial and error" so that the students themselves can deliberate the problems they encounter in their work and to improve their learning experiences.

The University News focuses on reporting campus events and matters concerning college students both at home and abroad. Each issue is comprised of eight pages:
Editorial Policies
The positions of editors and reporters are mainly held by junior students, who are responsible for layout designs, interviews, and getting the news stories; while senior students take up leadership positions in setting editorial policy, direction and news, as well as preparing the style manual and making editorial decisions regarding the types of news to be published.

Newsroom Equipment
Equipment in the newsroom includes computers, telephones, and fax machines to support reporters in gathering news. Students thereby learn how to find news, how to interview sources, and how to write a news report from the information gathered. Editors use Indesign software to layout pages, apply and integrate pagination software specific to the news industry and use Photoshop and Illustrator software for illustrations. Online Newspaper
Making use of state-of-art digital media technologies, The University News launched a multimedia platform titled Uonline. Applying audio-visual and multimedia interactive functions, student journalists present news on Uonline for Internet users, allowing interaction with readers. The launch of Uonline has enabled a student experimental newspaper to mix audio-visual media with mobile communication, reaching beyond NCCU campus.

Legacy
The Department of Journalism was founded in 1935 at NCCU which had earlier been reestablished in 1932 from the former Central Chengchi Institute founded in 1927 in mainland China. After disruption by the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s, together with NCCU itself, the Department of Journalism was reopened in Taiwan in 1954. NCCU now offers the most acclaimed journalism and communication program in Taiwan.
The University News has a long history and fine tradition. The publication adopted its current name in 1993, takes great pride in the legacy of its predecessor counterparts: the “South Spring News” (南泉新聞) edited by journalism students of the 1940s in then war capital of Chongqing, the “Student News” (學生新聞) of the 1970s, the “Cha-Mei Report” (柵美報導) of the 1980s, and the “Greater Taipei Report” (大台北報導) of 1991. The paper covers mainly events and issues of concern to students, faculty, and the university community.
